Is Your Neck in Check? September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month!

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month.Thyroid Cancer is the most common Endocrine Cancer. Thyroid Cancer is now the 6th most Common Cancer in Women and known to be much more PREVALENT in Women than Men. When diagnosed early most types of Thyroid Cancer have a very good prognosis.
Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Association Encourages Women to Learn About Thyroid Cancer and to Ask Your Doctor for a Neck Check. This can be done very quickly. The message for Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month is "Find It Early". Early Detection is the Key! This Cancer is often overlooked, slow growing and is on the rise. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 37,200 new cases of thyroid cancer in the U.S. in 2009. Of these new cases, about 27,200 will occur in women and about 10,000 will occur in men.

When Detected Early, Most Thyroid Cancer is Treatable! In the early stages of thyroid cancer, many patients do not experience symptoms. As Thyroid Cancer develops, symptoms can include a lump or nodule in the front of the neck, hoarseness or difficulty speaking, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a pain in the throat and neck area. Please visit the website to learn more... thyca.org
Yes, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer three years ago. My Thyroid was removed and the surgeon told me most of my Thyroid was diseased. My Thyroid Cancer required Radioactive Iodine Treatment which was administered by a Radiation Oncologist. Every six months I see my Endocrinologist and have a combination of blood tests, physical examination, and or thyroid ultrasound, Pet scan, CAT scan, lung scan and radioiodine whole body scan. My Thyroid Cancer was detected in a routine gynecology appointment. So, please make sure either your physician or gynecologist CHECKS YOUR NECK. Here's hoping all my favorite Fashionista's will pass this very important information on to your family and friends. xo, Betsy

I have also dealt with thyroid cancer which was detected quite by accident. I agree strongly with all that you have said on your blog about this disease and hope that people will ask for the "neck-check" when they go their physicians.

Thank you for spotlighting the importance of early detection of thyroid cancer. Especially as women, we should all be so vigilant about caring for our bodies and seeking diagnosis and treatment early. I would like to celebrate the good health of Betsy Brown; my best friend and creator of A Few Goody Gumdrops!!!

I am the proud husband of Betsy and have gone through every step of this process with her...the testing, the surgery, the follow-up and the worry and rewards that come with this and every other type of cancer and disease.

For the past three years, I have watched my wife put all of her energy into helping others to understand the process that they will go through as they begin to deal with the different stages of diagnosis and treatment. While the average person (myself included) would probably feel sorry for himself or herself and ask, "why me?", I have never seen or heard my wife once complain or take this attitude. She has taught me, our family, and so many others internal strength, how to maintain a positive attitude and how to look beyond oneself.

Thank you Betsy, for making all of those close to you so very proud.

All my love.
